What Conference Means to Me: Terry Colwell

Posted: 11.05.17

The NPUK Conference for me, is something that I look forward to each year. When TJ was diagnosed in 2013, it was only a few months before the conference was being held. I will admit that when we first received the invitation to go we were very apprehensive about it…but we decided it would be nice to meet all the people we had been speaking to on Facebook – all the people that had been supporting us.

Our first conference was very emotional, but amazing at the same time. Everyone made us feel very welcome from the moment we walked in to the moment we left. We met some amazing people and amazing kids, and although we have all been thrown together through devastating circumstances, we have made some life-long friends. When people say it’s like a family, it really is. Every year we meet new families and even though we don’t ever get to meet in person until conference, it’s like we have known each other for years. I know that my kids love going and I know that they are safe when they go out for their days out, which I know they enjoy. The weekends for all of us are like an emotional rollercoaster, with highs and lows, but we all seem to bounce off each other and together we are stronger. I particularly enjoy the Saturday evenings, where we all get to let our hair down and relax with the tombola, raffle and disco…all while having a drink and getting maybe a bit too tipsy at times lol!

Then it’s all over in a flash, and before we know it we all have to go home. That’s the worst part: saying goodbye and thinking we won’t see most of these people until next year. Yes we can talk on good old
Facebook, but it’s not the same.Toni and her team do such a wonderful job each year to make sure that everyone has a good time, and I would just like to say a huge thank you to her.
Massive love to all the NPUK family xx
