Captain’s Weekend 2026: A Fantastic Success at Wearside Golf Club

Wearside Golf Club hosted its annual Captain’s Weekend in June 2026, delivering three days of golf, laughter, friendly competition and community spirit.

The weekend featured three different competitions each day, with a wide range of fun prizes on offer. Members and guests enjoyed the course in good weather, shared plenty of memorable moments, and got behind the event with great enthusiasm — including a fun fancy-dress appearance from Fred Flintstone!

Captain Craig Mathieson captured the spirit of the weekend when he said:

“…Captain’s Weekend 19th to 21st June is the biggest weekend of the year at Wearside Golf Club. A weekend of fun, golf and enjoyment. Three different competitions on each day with many fun prizes…”

This year’s Captain’s Charity was Niemann-Pick UK (NPUK). You would have seen the banners and nearest-the-pin boards around the club, and the support from members was brilliant.

Craig chose NPUK because it’s a cause that’s very close to his heart. He’s been fundraising for the charity for nearly 20 years in memory of his niece Lucy Mathieson (NPC) who is no longer between us since 2007. Over that time he’s raised almost £150,000 through his golf days and other events. It’s something he’s really passionate about, and we were proud to support it during his captaincy.

A huge thank you has to go to Craig Mathieson for putting this weekend together. He works hard every year to make Captain’s Weekend something special, and this year was another great one. On top of everything else he does for the club, his commitment to NPUK is something we all really admire.
