Urgent Appeal for Support After Malicious Attack on September 11th

On the night of September 11th, a malicious fire completely destroyed Vermont House, the long-standing base for Niemann-Pick UK (NPUK)’s Central Office. This catastrophic attack has left our charity facing immense challenges, with the entire building reduced to ruins. Caught in the crossfire of ongoing threats directed at a neighboring office, NPUK now relies on community support to rebuild and sustain our mission.
As the UK’s only charity dedicated solely to Niemann-Pick diseases, NPUK provides essential support, information, advocacy, and a sense of community for families affected by these rare and devastating conditions. This disaster has compounded our existing financial strains as a small organisation, but our dedication to those we serve endures. With your help, we can overcome this setback and continue making a positive difference.
What Happened on 11th September?
The fire, confirmed as a deliberate arson attack, engulfed and completely destroyed Vermont House. Drone photos and aerial imagery reveal a scene of total disaster, with the structure reduced to charred remains and debris scattered across the site. The building, which housed multiple offices, has been declared a crime scene, underscoring the severity of the malicious act.
For months prior to the attack, Vermont House endured threats, graffiti, and demonstrations primarily targeted at the nearby office of Labour MP Sharon Hodgson. Tragically, this hostility escalated into a fire that obliterated the entire complex, including NPUK’s Central Office, which had served as our operational hub for many years.
This event marks a profound loss, not just of physical space, but of the stability it provided for our work.
Impact on NPUK and Our Community
The complete destruction of Vermont House represents a devastating blow to NPUK. We’ve lost our entire physical office—a central hub for coordination, resources, and daily operations—along with irreplaceable equipment and materials. This total loss intensifies our financial challenges, making it essential to secure support for long-term recovery.
For families navigating Niemann-Pick diseases—rare genetic disorders that impair lipid metabolism and cause severe health complications—NPUK is an indispensable lifeline. We deliver guidance on treatments, emotional support, advocacy with healthcare providers, and connections to others in similar situations. The obliteration of our base risks disrupting these critical services, potentially leaving vulnerable families without the resources they depend on.
In the words of John Lee Taggart, NPUK Head of Communications and the organiser of our fundraising appeal:
“…while we will be working with insurers, seeking legal advice, and creating a continuity plan, the immediate costs of disruption and recovery are far beyond what we can manage alone. That’s why we are asking for your support. Every donation, big or small, will help us rebuild, recover vital equipment, and ensure we can continue supporting families affected by Niemann-Pick diseases. Thank you so much…”.
Our Response and Next Steps
NPUK remains committed to resilience in the face of this tragedy. We’re collaborating with insurers to process claims, consulting legal experts for guidance, and establishing a comprehensive business continuity plan to maintain operations. We’ve transitioned to remote and alternative arrangements to ensure services continue without interruption.
Our focus is on full rebuilding: restoring a new base, replenishing lost resources, and fortifying our ability to withstand future adversities. This will enable us to uphold our advocacy, educational programs, and community initiatives for the long term.
